Is it Valentine’s Day already and we just lost track of time? Oh no, it was just the New York premiere of The Giver last night. But the female stars in particular opted to dress in the red color family, giving way to coordination that boded quite well for group photos.
Taylor Swift chose a dual-toned Monique Lhuillier dress, Katie Holmes went for a Zac Posen look in a light shade of pink, Odeya Rush wore a dramatic, scarlet Georges Hobeika gown, and Meryl Streep donned a red embellished top. Even model Lindsay Ellingson, who isn’t in the film, showed up in a blush-hued Wes Gordon gown.
While some might think the actresses were merely aiming to match their ‘fits to the carpet, fans of the book might make a symbolic connection between the story and the hue of choice. In The Giver, the characters live in a sheltered, black-and-white world, and protagonist Jonas gets his first flash of enlightenment when he sees a glimpse of the color red. Red then continues to recur as a symbol for emotion and freedom throughout the novel. Fashion coincidence? We do not think so.
And if our suspicions are correct, kudos to the cast for giving a subtle nod to the devoted readers of the novel, making it one of the more intellectual not to mention pretty red carpets we’ve seen in a while.
